Practice Database — Distance Control #03

Equipment

  • 1 Putter

  • 1 Tape Measure

  • 8 Golf Balls

  • 14 Ball Marks

Set-Up

  • Place 4 ball marks each 1'/ 2.54cm apart in a line (Noted as 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D on the chart)

  • From position "1A" measure 35' / 9.1m in the opposite direction (Direction “South”, see chart for reference) and place another 4 ball marks 1'/ 2.54cm apart in a line (Noted as 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D on the chart)

    • These 8 ball marks are the gates you will be putting towards

  • From point "1A" (see chart), place ball marks at:

    • 5'/ 1.52m from point "1A" (Noted as "1" on the chart)

    • 10' / 3.04m from point "1A" (Noted as "2" on the chart)

    • 15' / 1.52m from point "1A" (Noted as "3" on the chart)

    • 20' / 6.09m from point "1A" (Noted as "4" on the chart)

    • 25' / 7.62m from point "1A" (Noted as "5" on the chart)

    • 30' / 9.14m from point "1A" (Noted as "6" on the chart)

  • These six ball marks are points from which you will putt

  • Start the drill from starting point #1 (see chart for reference) and putt towards "North" (see chart for reference).

  • If you have a successful attempt, move to starting point "2" (see chart for reference) and putt in Direction "South" (see chart for reference)

Goal

Goal From Starting point #1 (see chart):

  • From between points 1-2 the goal is to putt the ball between points 1A & 1B (1' / 30cm space)

  • From between points 2-4 the goal is to putt the ball between points 1A & 1C (2' / 60cm space)

  • From between points 4-6 the goal is to putt the ball between points 1A & 1D (3' / 91cm space)

When putting towards “North” ignore points “3” & “5” (see chart for reference)

Goal From Starting Point #2 (see chart)

  • From between points 6-5 the goal is to putt the ball between points 2A & 2B (1' / 30cm space)

  • From between points 5-3 the goal is to putt the ball between points 2A & 2C (2' / 60cm space)

  • From between points 3-1 the goal is to putt the ball between points 2A & 2D (3' / 91cm space)

When putting towards “South” ignore points “2” & “4” (see chart for reference)

Sequence

Gradually move backward by 6" / 15cm after successful attempts in both directions

  1. From Point 1 to between 1A-1B (Putting North)

  2. From Point 6 to between 2A-2B (Putting South)

  3. From Point 2 to between 1A-1C (Putting North)

  4. From Point 5 to between 2A-2C (Putting South)

  5. From Point 4 to between 1A-1D (Putting North)

  6. From Point 3 to between 2A-2D (Putting South)

Defining Successful Attempts

  • A successful attempt is one where both putts (in directions "North" and "South") both finish within the appropriate distance gates given the distance you are putting from.

Example

  • From between points "1" and "2", the ball must come to rest between points "1A" & "1B"

  • If the ball rolls past point "1B" or stops short of point "1A", this is an unsuccessful attempt

Important Points

  • You cannot change your starting position and putt in the other direction (direction “South”) until you have a successful attempt in direction "North".

  • If you have a successful attempt in direction "North", and then have an unsuccessful attempt in direction "South", return to direction "North" and repeat the putt from the same spot as your previous attempt in that direction.

  • If you have successful putts in both directions ("North" and "South"), return to the side you started from and move backward by 6" / 15cm from where your last successful putt in that direction was.

Drill Completion

  • The drill is complete once you have successfully progressed from point "1" to point "6" (putting North) and point "6" to point "1" (putting South) in increments of 6" / 15cm
